  • United Arab Emirates’ Aluminum Unwrought Market Outlook Report

    • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Aluminum smelters (unwrought producers) fall into two categories: primary and secondary smelters. Molten aluminum cast as unwrought products can be produced either through alumina electrolysis in primary smelters or through remelting scrap and pure ingots in secondary smelters. Primary smelting is a cost-intensive process; thus, such plants are usually large-scale producers that can be economical with capacities above 100,000 tonnes. But remelting aluminum in secondary smelters requires much lower costs, making small-scale capacities economical.

Secondary smelting capacity is limited in the United Arab Emirates and most of the unwrought aluminum comes from EGA’s primary smelter. Unwrought aluminum is in three forms: ingots, billets, and slabs. While aluminum ingots are produced through single-batch casting of molten aluminum in 1,000lb or 50lb molds, slab and billets are produced through direct chill casting. Ingots are re-melted before use, but billets and slabs are usually extruded and rolled, respectively, into profiles and flat products. With no integrated hot rolling mills in the country, there is no domestic supply of slabs.

Secondary smelting capacity is limited in Saudi Arabia and most of the unwrought aluminum comes from Ma’aden’s primary smelter. Unwrought aluminum is in three forms: ingots, billets, and slabs. Considering there is only one integrated hot rolling mill in the country that also produces slabs, it does not offer its slabs in the market.

Downstream sector of aluminum industry has developed significantly in Bahrain, as Bahrain has become one the major exporter of aluminum semis in the globe, while it is well-known as the second biggest primary aluminum producer in the region. This has raised its aluminum ingot consumption per capita about 10 fold above global mean. Among different sectors of aluminum downstream in Bahrain, more threats attribute to extruders.

Oman is the fourth biggest aluminum primary producer in the Middle East. The key downstream capacities have been developed close to the aluminum smelter in Oman (similar to elsewhere in the Middle East), so that they can easily access to the primary materials in form of liquid hot metal. Using liquid hot metal can save re-melting costs, giving rise to higher competitiveness. Although other producers in the region benefits from neighboring to smelters as well as utilizing secondary resources to feed their capacities, but semis producers in Oman negligibly bring scraps into use, leading to lower competitiveness in comparison with other producers in the region.

Although Saudi Arabia has launched production of primary aluminum earlier than producers, but it has experienced appreciable development in downstream sector of aluminum industry. This has brought out more rapid growth rate of consumption per capita in comparison with the globe. Sheets and profiles as the main growing aluminum semis in Saudi Arabia, have encountered a drop in demand; however the demand is still above supply volume, providing strong enough drives for production growth.

Aluminum industry in the United Arab Emirates is the biggest industry outside of non-oil sector. Development of upstream sector of aluminum industry in the UAE not only brought out innovation of a unique reduction technology but also a considerable expansion of downstream sector of aluminum industry. This has given rise to a same level of aluminum consumption per capita with China, the major consumer of aluminum in the globe.
