Produced in different sizes, welded steel pipes have various applications in a number of industries. Infrastructure is the largest consumer of welded steel pipes in the oil and gas industry. Steel pipes are also used in central heating systems, air conditioning, as well as low-pressure oil transfer, while galvanized pipes are used in water supply systems. Moreover, stainless steel pipes are used to transfer liquids such as hot water, sulfur, chemicals and petrochemicals, food and drugs, oil and gas processing, wastewater systems, and water treatment equipment.

Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $61,000 in 2019, the United Arab Emirates was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Gold, diamond, and pearl (as jewelry) account for a quarter of exports from the country. With a history of over 20 years in the UAE, the iron and steel industry accounts for 2% of the country’s exports. Downstream iron and steel products constitute the major share of exports in the industry.

Market drivers of the UAE’s welded steel pipes

The production and consumption of crude steel requires energy; the industry has always been ranked as an energy-intensive sector. Access to cheap energy in the UAE can significantly reduce production costs. This has driven developments in the country’s iron and steel industry over the past years; the per-capita consumption of crude steel in the UAE is above the global average, but still below countries with developed iron and steel industries. Thus, the availability of cheap energy is expected to continue to support further development of the industry in the UAE and boost crude steel demand as a result. The consumption of welded steel pipes in the oil and gas industry is one of the most important applications of these products; the mechanical properties of welded steel pipe have resulted in considerable demand.

The UAE reported its first case of Covid-19 in February 2020. Not much longer, in March, social distancing and lockdowns were implemented. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. As the pandemic continued to spread, lockdowns were extended into mid-April, but activities were gradually resumed under certain protocols. The country is now past the first wave of Covid-19, but many are still forecasting worse to come in the coming months. Thus, lockdowns are expected to continue, albeit temporarily, disrupting industrial performance and eventually lead to a decline in demand for crude steel.

Overview of the UAE’s welded steel pipe market

Over the past years, capacities for welded steel pipes have been developed in the UAE. In order to reduce imports, more capacities are needed. The country has mostly imported welded steel pipes over the past years, with limited exports. Based on estimates, the country’s net imports are expected to decline as the output of crude steel and consequently other products such as HRC (as raw material for welded steel pipe production) and welded steel pipes increases.

Breakdown of the UAE’s welded steel pipe market

Domestic demand for welded steel pipes in the forecast timeframe as well as the previous period has been broken down using three factors. The first factor breaks down the market into three categories: carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. Past and future trends for each type of material have been analyzed. Carbon steel welded pipes hold the largest share of the market. In the second breakdown, products are distinguished based on diameter: greater than 16 inches and smaller than 16 inches; welded steel pipes with diameters smaller than 16 inches hold the largest market share. Finally, using the third factor, welded steel pipes are categorized based on their applications in different industries. Infrastructure is the largest consumer of welded steel pipes in the UAE.
