- TRY: 365,000 ₺
Unwrought copper is an intermediate group of products that includes slabs, billets, and ingots; it is used as raw material to produce copper semis and downstream products. It should be noted that ingots have a wider range of applications and are also used to produce billets and slabs. Alloy intermediate products (especially brass) account for the largest share of demand. This is because brass RBS have stronger demand compared to other copper semis.
Product Description
With a per-capita GDP of $61,000 in 2019, the UAE was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Due to the growing demand in power and telecom infrastructure, wires and cables as well as related industries have been developed.
Market drivers of the UAE’s unwrought copper
Faucets and valves for water and gas in construction and industry are some of the major consumers of brass sections and tubes, mostly produced from the extrusion of billets. Along with the economic growth over the recent years, the consumption of these products has increased and they have gained good markets in both construction and industry. Given the forecasts of growing population and increasing construction, demand for copper and alloy billets is expected to grow.
Transformers are used in electrical infrastructure. Due to the population growth and the need for further development, the UAE’s electrical infrastructure will grow, boosting demand for transformers. Copper RBS and sometimes alloy RBS are used in the manufacturing of transformers and electrical enclosures. Developments in the power infrastructure will support billet demand.
Currently, due to its high prices, copper has been replaced with other metals such as aluminum in some applications. With forecasts of higher copper prices in the future, the trend is expected to continue. This can put pressure on demand growth for copper and unwrought copper by extension.
Overview of the UAE’s unwrought copper market
Billets are the major type of unwrought copper produced in the UAE; scrap accounts for a large share of raw materials used in the production of billets, mostly used to produce alloy RBS in integrated plants. Thus, a large part of unwrought supply and demand relies on the performance of RBS producers. Thus, trade balance is expected to remain close to equilibrium over the coming years.
Breakdown of the UAE’s unwrought copper market
The UAE’s unwrought copper market is broken down using two factors: composition and application. Unwrought copper includes slabs, billets, and ingots; billets hold the largest share of the market. Using the first factor, unwrought copper is categorized based on composition: unwrought copper (non-alloy), unwrought brass, and unwrought alloy (excluding brass); brass products account for the largest market share in the UAE. The second factor categorizes unwrought copper based on applications in different industries; infrastructure, industrial equipment, and durable goods are some of the most important consumers of unwrought copper.
