In terms of applications, wires and cables can be categorized as electrical, telecom, and winding wire. Electrical wires and cables include all electrical conductors in the power industry (both HV and LV), automotive, construction, equipment and machinery, or in other words, all industrial applications. Telecom wires and cables include twisted pairs, high-frequency cables, coaxial cables, optical fiber, and a combination of copper and optical fiber. Winding wire has a thin coating and is mostly used in coil windings.

Product Description

With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. However, Turkey is still a developing country, according to the UN in 2019. Large parts of the country are located on the West Asia copper belt. The country has the second largest copper reserves in the Middle East, behind Iran, but it is not ranked highly on a global scale. As a result, the country’s copper industry is mostly focused on downstream sectors; developments in the downstream sectors down to wires and cables have turned the country into one of the largest exporters of copper products in the region.

Market drivers of Turkey’s wires and cables

The increasing urbanization and the growing population will drive demand for power wires and cables as well as winding wire as power demand increases. Turbines and generators, some major consumers of winding wire, are key determiners of winding wire demand. Moreover, it goes without saying that transmission, distribution, and subtransmission networks are major consumers of power wires and cables.

The country’s plans for increasing the share of renewables in the supply of energy can double the growth rate of demand for power wires and cables as well as winding wire. This is because renewable power plants generally use smaller generators compared to fossil fuels, creating stronger demand for winding wire.

Wireless technologies have rapidly grown around the world; they have also had a good penetration rate in Turkey. Public telephones have mostly been replaced by wireless telecom equipment such as mobile phones. Internet networks have also expanded considerably and part of the country’s internet infrastructure relies on wireless technologies. As the costs related to building and setting up wireless technologies have decreased, the growth potential for these technologies in telecom systems and networks is expected to be strong. However, there are restrictions, such as the lower speed of wireless networks relative to traditional wired ones as well as the sanctions.

The growing urban population and the increasing demand for housing in Turkey will translate into developments in the construction sector, boosting demand for power and telecom wires and cables. It should be noted that construction is one of the major consumers of both power and telecom wires and cables.

Turkey is the fifth largest consumer of electricity in Europe. Given the growth potential for industrial activities in the country, demand for electricity is expected to grow over the coming years; this can drive developments in power generation capacities, boosting demand for power wires and cables.

Overview of Turkey’s wire and cable market

Turkey is a developing country with considerable growth rates over the past two decades; this is expected to continue over the coming years, albeit more slowly. Wires and cables are one of the requirements of economic growth and industrial development. On this account, the country has created significant capacities to meet domestic demand for wires and cables. As a result, the production of wires and cables (including power, telecom, and winding wire) has increased. Due to the wide applications of LV wires and cables, producers are more focused on this type. Regarding telecom wires and cables, the increasing consumption of optical fiber cables has fueled a faster growth for these cables relative to other types. Moreover, the production of winding wire has increased by 30% over the past decade. The country has been a net exporter over the past years, and that is not expected to change in the future. However, net exports of power wires and cables will grow more slowly, while telecom wires and cables will have a faster growth rate in net exports. However, net exports of winding wire are expected to decline. But since producers of power wires and cables hold the largest share of Turkey’s wire and cable market, the supply surplus of wires and cables is expected to increase, pushing net exports higher.

Breakdown of Turkey’s wire and cable market

Turkey’s wire and cable market is broken down using three factors. In the first breakdown, wires and cables are analyzed in terms of product type: electrical wires and cables, telecom wires and cables, and winding wire. Wires and cables are also categorized based on composition and material type, including copper, aluminum, and optical fiber; telecom wires and cables are the only applications of optical fiber wires and cables. Finally, a distinction is made based on end users, including construction, infrastructure, transportation, and durable goods.
