Steel cold-formed sections (CFS) are produced in various shapes with wide applications in different industries. The construction industry is the largest consumer of CFS in columns, frames, doors and windows, fences, and railings. Steel CFS is produced in two forms: open-seam and welded sections with various industrial and constructional applications. A major portion of CFS is used in manufacturing doors and windows. CFS with small square and rectangular cross sections is used as grill for doors and windows, railings for staircases, and fences. Open CFS sections are used in the ceilings of industrial sheds and guardrails. Estimates suggest that Turkey’s steel CFS market will decline over the coming years compared to the previous years, even without supply tightness of sheets.
Product Description
With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. However, Turkey is still a developing country, according to the UN in 2019. With an annual output of 35 million tonnes of crude steel, the country is the largest producer in the region. The country is also a regional leader in HRC production.
Market drivers of Turkey’s steel CFS
The share of the manufacturing sector in Turkey’s economy has increased over the past years, owing to increased industrialization. Along with industrial development, demand for steel as the most commonly used industrial metal will strengthen. The uptrend in the share of the manufacturing sector in the country’s economy is expected to continue over the coming years, driving demand for steel along with the growing industrialization. Columns and frames in buildings are some of the most important applications of steel CFS; the mechanical properties of steel CFS have resulted in considerable demand.
The auto industry is one of the largest consumers of steel in Turkey. The sector has had significant growth over the past years to make the country the second largest producer of commercial vehicles in Europe and the fifth largest producer of passenger vehicles in the region. With a nationalistic approach over the recent years aimed at producing domestic cars that can lead global markets, the industry has attracted massive investment; over the past two decades, more than $800 million has been invested in the sector on annual average. As government support for electric vehicles increases, the industry is expected to continue its accelerated growth. This can significantly boost demand for steel and steel products.
Turkey reported the first case of Covid-19 in the latter half of March 2020. Not much longer, in mid-April, daily confirmed cases exceeded 5,000 and the country was officially facing a pandemic. To fight the pandemic, the government restricted businesses and ordered nation-wide lockdowns. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. Thus, Turkey’s real GDP growth is forecast to be around -1%. With the restrictions implemented by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for most steel products will weaken. Moreover, the spread of Covid-19 in Turkey’s export destinations will weigh on the country’s exports.
Overview of Turkey’s steel CFS market
Great capacities have been developed in Turkey’s steel CFS industry. The country has remained a net exporter over the past years, with limited imports. Exports are mostly sent to Iraq. Based on estimates, supply is expected to continue to exceed demand and no supply deficit is likely. Considering the country’s growing industrialization, demand for crude steel as well as steel products is expected to continue; however, it should be noted that the Covid-19 pandemic will hinder Turkey’s rapid, full economic recovery in the near term. Therefore, net imports are expected to increase slightly in the early years of the forecast period and remain relatively flat afterwards.
Breakdown of Turkey’s steel CFS market
Domestic demand for steel CFS in the forecast timeframe as well as the previous period has been broken down using two factors. The first factor breaks down the market into three categories: carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. Past and future trends for each type of material have been analyzed. Carbon steel CFS holds the largest share of the market. In the second breakdown, products are distinguished based on applications in different industries. The construction industry is the largest consumer of steel CFS in Turkey.
