Turkey’s Mined Iron Ore Market Outlook Report

  • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Iron ore from mines generally has a grade below 50%; using it to produce crude steel, although technically possible, incurs high production costs and the economy is annulled due to the low recovery rate. Thus, most steelmakers use iron ore with grades above 60% to economically justify their operations. Iron ore can be divided into magnetite and hematite ore depending on ore type. Mined iron ore is mostly used in steelmaking, with only a small part of lower-quality ore types used in other industries such as cement production.

Product Description

With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. However, Turkey is still a developing country, according to the UN in 2019. With an annual output of 35 million tonnes of crude steel, the country is the largest producer in the region. EAFs have accounted for almost 70% of the country’s output on average over the past years. However, that share has shrunk with increased development in blast furnaces over the recent years.

Market drivers of Turkey’s mines and iron ore output

Iron ore mines in Turkey are mostly small-scale. Production costs are generally high in these mines; they only become economically justifiable during periods of high iron ore prices. Given forecasts of the declining price of iron ore in the long term, profits of iron ore mines in Turkey are expected to be affected and supply is likely to be tight. Moreover, lower iron ore prices in the future can force steelmakers to use higher-quality imported iron ore (especially from Brazil), leading to weaker domestic demand for iron ore.

Blast furnaces account for only about 30% of Turkey’s crude steel output, but the share has been increasing over the recent years. Higher energy prices in recent years are the main culprit for slowing down the development of electric furnace capacities while accelerating blast furnace projects. Thus, the share of blast furnaces in the country’s crude steel output is expected to continue to expand, leading to stronger demand for iron ore and further developments in mining.

Turkey recently announced that a new massive natural gas reserve has been discovered; with an estimated size of 320 billion cubic meters, the reserve can largely cut the country’s dependence on imports. Following the discovery, gas-related industries are more likely to be developed. As an industry depending on natural gas, DRI developments can reduce the country’s dependence on steel scrap imports and also boost demand for high-grade iron ore.

The Turkish Armed Forces Pension Fund (OYAK), one of the main shareholders of Erdemir (a top steelmaker in the country), announced the news of building a new pelletizing plant in cooperation with a Japanese company. With a capacity of 3 million tonnes and an initial capital of $750 million, the plant will contribute significantly to demand for iron ore fine and concentrate.

Overview of Turkey’s iron ore market

Since most iron ore mines in Turkey belong to the small-scale category, they generally have a higher stripping rate compared to the global average in order to make operations economical. Moreover, with iron ore prices forecast to decline over the coming years, only mines with lower stripping rates will be economical. Meanwhile, Turkey’s demand for iron ore is expected to grow due to blast furnace developments, facilitating imports of higher-quality iron ore in larger volumes. On balance, iron ore mining operations in Turkey are expected to decline over the coming years.

Breakdown of Turkey’s iron ore market

Turkey’s iron ore market is analyzed based on ore type: hematite ore, magnetite ore, and others. Consumption is broken down into high-grade, medium-grade, and low-grade iron ore.
