  • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Lead and zinc are usually found together in mines; almost 70% of total global mine production of lead comes from reserves that contain both minerals. Thus, lead concentrate is produced inevitably when producing zinc concentrate; there is a strong correlation between the mine output of these metals. Since zinc is more abundant in the Earth’s crust, lead and zinc mines generally contain more zinc than lead. Most of the lead mine supply in Turkey is from lead-zinc mines, with very few mines that contain only lead ore.

Product Description

With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. Located on the West Asia copper, lead and zinc belt, Turkey has a number of mines containing these minerals. Most of the country’s lead and zinc output is from multi-metal orebodies including zinc-lead and copper-zinc orebodies. However, output from orebodies predominantly containing zinc has increased over the recent years. Despite massive demand for these metals, mine output is mostly exported as smelting capacities have not been developed.

Market drivers of Turkey’s lead and zinc concentrate

Refined zinc output is mostly from mine production. Thus, refined demand can significantly affect the concentrate market. Further, stronger demand for galvanized steel over the coming years will support the zinc market.

The market for galvanized steel is growing in Turkey. Demand for galvanized steel is expected to grow with the expanding population and the increasing urbanization. This will boost demand for refined zinc, driving developments in smelting capacity and pushing demand for zinc concentrate.

Although Turkey is one of the largest consumers of refined zinc in the region due to its massive auto industry, the country still imports the majority of its lead demand to avoid environmental issues related to lead refining. Part of the demand is also met through recycled batteries. This has suppressed zinc concentrate demand.

Overview of Turkey’s lead and zinc concentrate market

Turkey is an exporter of lead and zinc concentrate in the region. Without developed smelting capacities, almost all mine production of lead and zinc is exported. As a result, lead and zinc mine development has been restricted. However, with reserves almost intact, foreign investment has flowed in to exploit the oxide ore from the upper layers of the orebodies. It should be noted that the country’s mine output has mostly been exported to Iran, where there are massive primary production capacities. Further, lead concentrate from zinc ore concentration is also exported due to the environmental issues related to smelting and processing. Increased mine output over the recent years was due to foreign investment to exploit zinc ore; thus, net exports of oxide zinc ore is expected to continue to grow over the coming years. Also, the lead produced from zinc ore processing is also exported as an inevitable by-product. Considering the grade of the country’s lead and zinc reserves, net exports of zinc ore and concentrate is expected to outpace those of lead ore and concentrate.

Breakdown of Turkey’s lead and zinc concentrate market

Turkey’s lead and zinc concentrate market is categorized in terms of oxide and sulfide ore. Mine production is also analyzed separately for major mines. Sebinkarahisar, Pinargozu, and Akkaya are some of the major lead and zinc mines in Turkey.
