Turkey’s Ferroalloy Market Outlook Report

- TRY: 365,000 ₺
Ferroalloys are the most important consumables for steelmakers, used to remove impurities or produce steel alloys. Ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and ferrosilicomanganese are some of the most commonly used ferroalloys. Ferrosilicomanganese, which contains both manganese and silicon, has a growing market ahead; the share of this ferroalloy in providing the manganese required in steelmaking is rapidly growing, en route to dominate the ferromanganese market among global steelmakers. Ferrosilicomanganese is more commonly used by steelmakers that use minerals to produce steel. Since a large part of Turkey’s steel is produced from recycled scrap, these ferroalloys are not used as commonly.
Product Description
With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. However, Turkey is still a developing country, according to the UN in 2019. With an annual output of 35 million tonnes of crude steel, the country is the largest producer in the region. EAFs have accounted for almost 70% of the country’s output on average over the past years. However, that share has shrunk with increased development in blast furnaces over the recent years.
Market drivers of Turkey’s ferroalloys
Steel alloying is one of the most important applications of ferroalloys among Turkish steelmakers. Thus, the growth of the alloy steel market can be a major driver of ferroalloy demand in the country. Improved international standards for steel with higher strength and better physical and mechanical properties have directed steelmakers towards producing higher-quality ferroalloys.
Turkey’s auto industry is one of the major growing consumer industries of steel. The market of lighter-weight vehicles with lower fuel consumption is growing, while heavier vehicles with higher consumption are rapidly losing their market share. Thus, Turkey’s auto industry is moving towards the production of light vehicles or even electric vehicles (EVs). High-strength steel is required to produce lighter vehicles using thinner sections and sheets for the chassis and the body.
Turkey reported the first case of Covid-19 in the latter half of March 2020. Not much longer, in mid-April, daily confirmed cases exceeded 5,000 and the country was officially facing a pandemic. To fight the pandemic, the government restricted businesses and ordered nation-wide lockdowns. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. Thus, Turkey’s real GDP growth is forecast to be around -1%. With the restrictions implemented by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for steel products and consequently crude steel will weaken. Moreover, the spread of Covid-19 in Turkey’s export destinations will weigh on the country’s exports.
Overview of Turkey’s ferroalloy market
Owing to its large chromite reserves, Turkey is one of the major producers and exporters of ferrochrome. However, the country’s overall ferroalloy market is import-reliant; over the past years, the trade balance has been slightly negative. However, increased crude steel output and improved demand for ferroalloys have not affected the country’s net imports significantly, mostly due to increased domestic output. Given the significant share of blast furnaces in the country’s ferroalloy demand and with expectations of increased blast furnace output over the coming years, net imports of ferroalloys is likely to increase in the future.
Breakdown of Turkey’s ferroalloy market
Turkey’s ferroalloy market is analyzed based on type, including ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrosilicomanganse, ferrochrome, ferronickel, ferrosilicochrome, etc. More specifically, the ferrosilicon market is divided into high- and low-grade material, while ferromanganese and ferrochrome are analyzed according to carbon content (i.e., high- and low-carbon). Moreover, in addition to product type and material, other factors such as applications and consumption are also taken into account. The applications of ferroalloys generally fall into three categories: to remove impurities in steelmaking, to produce alloy steel and to produce iron and steel cast parts.
