Aluminum wire rod is generally produced using one of three processes: continuous casting and rolling, direct casting, and extrusion. The production process affects the dimensions, shape, quality, and purity of the wire rod. Most of the wire rod produced through extrusion is packed in bundles, but wire rod that is produced through casting is often packed as coils. Most of the wire rod coil produced in Turkey is through continuous casting and rolling. The process involves the continuous casting of billets and then rolling it into wire rod with the desired thickness.
Product Description
The production of aluminum wires and cables accounts for the main consumption of wire rod. Mechanical applications such as rivets, screws, fences, and meshes are also large consumers. Demand for aluminum wires and cables from electrical industries and related consumers is expected to be steady over the coming years.
With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. However, Turkey is still a developing country, according to the UN in 2019. With an annual consumption of 1.2 million tonnes of aluminum, the country is the largest consumer in the region. But there is only one primary smelter in the country, which has ramped up capacity to 82,000 tonnes since late 2015 with renovation and improvement plans. High power costs (a major part of aluminum production costs) have made primary aluminum production less attractive in Turkey.
Market drivers of aluminum wire rod
Aluminum is a major substitution threat to copper; as the spread between the two metals widens with rising copper prices, the threat becomes stronger. Since the consumption of copper as wire rod for the production of wires and cables accounts for a large share of the red metal’s consumption, increasing prices of copper and copper products will support demand for aluminum wire rod. In addition to the price advantage of aluminum over copper, its specific conductance per unit of weight is higher than that of copper. This is crucial in power transmission lines and systems. As the transmission expands to remote areas where the distance between transmission towers needs to be greater, light-weight cables will prove beneficial. This will boost the demand for aluminum wires and cables, which are much lighter than copper ones.
Turkey reported the first case of Covid-19 in the latter half of March 2020. Not much longer, in mid-April, daily confirmed cases exceeded 5,000 and the country was officially facing a pandemic. To fight the pandemic, the government restricted businesses and ordered nation-wide lockdowns. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. Thus, Turkey’s real GDP growth is forecast to be around -1%. With the restrictions implemented by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for aluminum wire rod will fall. Moreover, the spread of Covid-19 in Turkey’s export destinations will weigh on the country’s exports.
Overview of Turkey’s aluminum wire rod market
Turkey is recognized as one of the largest exporters of wires and cables in the world. The country’s exports of wires and cables grew at average rate of 2.8% per year between 2015 and 2019 to make the country the second largest exporter in the world in 2019. Turkey’s massive wire and cable industry, the main consumer of aluminum and copper wire rod, has created impressive demand for these products, which are mostly supplied from domestic output and imports have only a small share in meeting aluminum wire rod demand.
Nonetheless, Turkey’s trade balance of aluminum wire rod has been slightly negative over the years; net imports between 2015 and 2019 averaged about 7,500 tonnes. Given the growing demand in the country, the trade balance is expected to move further into negative territory. But considering the massive domestic wire rod capacity, net imports will not change significantly.

The first factor breaks down the market into three categories based on alloy material: commercially pure aluminum, heat-treatable alloys, and non-heat-treatable alloys. In the second breakdown, products are distinguished based on diameter: 9.5mm, 12mm, and other sizes; the 9.5mm wire rod accounts for a major share of the market.
