However, since most of Saudi Arabia’s zinc output comes from copper-zinc mines, mine production of lead is not significant in the country.

With a GDP of over $793 billion in 2019, Saudi Arabia was the largest economy in the region that year. The country’s economy, the second richest country in terms of natural resources, is heavily dependent on oil, its main natural resource. But since the introduction of the 2030 Vision in 2016, the country has determined to minimize oil reliance. The country does not have significantly rich lead and zinc reserves on a regional scale. Due to the limited mine production, the development of smelting capacities is not economically justifiable. However, mine production of zinc has increased  over the recent years, taking a larger share in the economy.

Demand for galvanized steel is expected to grow with the expanding population and the increasing urbanization, boosting demand for unwrought zinc; this can drive the development of smelting capacities, pushing the consumption of zinc concentrate.

Saudi Arabia does not have rich reserves of lead and zinc. Since most of the lead and zinc output comes from copper-zinc reserves, mine production of lead is not significant in the country. As a result, the development of smelting capacities is not economically justifiable. Thus, mine output is mostly exported. Without domestic demand for zinc concentrate, the country will remain a net exporter; export volumes heavily depends on mine performance, especially that of copper-zinc mines. As mines are mostly controlled by state enterprises that enjoy government subsidies, they are less sensitive to zinc price changes. At the same time, zinc concentrate is a by-product in most mines, meaning that it involves no additional costs and mostly depends on the copper market. Despite the small copper reserves of these mines and their short lifespan, new projects will soon come online; zinc output is expected to increase and then decrease over the coming years, eventually putting pressure on net exports of zinc concentrate.
