Power wires and cables include all electrical conductors used in the power industry, automotive, construction, equipment and machinery, or put another way, all industrial applications. As one of the early steps in the supply chain of wires and cables with metal conductors, metal wire rod is drawn into wires in different diameters, which are then coated with different insulations based on applications. Wires are also used in wiring harnesses for motor vehicles. Finally, wires (coated or otherwise) are twisted into cables. Copper is the main conductor used in the production of power wires and cables in Oman.

Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion of the country’s exports. In 2019, about 70% of the country’s total export revenues came from oil and oil-related products. Limited availability of raw materials for refined copper production has restricted upstream developments in the country. Despite a refined capacity of 20,000 tonnes, output has declined over the recent years due to the tighter availability of concentrate; output has mostly been from imported concentrate. However, the country is one of the key players in the region in terms of downstream products, especially wire rod and wires and cables. Wire rod is mostly used to produce power wires and cables, a major part of which is exported.

Market drivers of Oman’s power wires and cables

Since the demand for power wires and cables is met from domestic output in Oman, developments in the electricity grid will create great demand for these products.

Population growth increases demand for new residential buildings in Oman. Since construction is one of the major consumers of power wires and cables, demand for these products is expected to grow.

Overview of Oman’s power wire and cable market

There are two major producers of wires and cables in Oman, mostly producing power wires and cables. A major part of their output is exported every year. However, the significant growth of demand for power wires and cables over the recent years as a result of sizeable construction growth and infrastructure development have put pressure on exports. As the trend in new buildings and infrastructure development is expected to continue over the coming years, net exports of power wires and cables are likely to increase gradually.

Breakdown of Oman’s power wire and cable market

Oman’s power wire and cable market has been broken down using three factors. In terms of type, both supply and demand for power wires and cables are categorized into HV and LV wires and cables. Demand is also analyzed in terms of conductor type, including copper and aluminum. Finally, a distinction has been made based on applications in different industries; construction, power and telecom, and transportation are major consumers of power wires and cables.
