Ferroalloys are the most important consumables for steelmakers, used to remove impurities or produce steel alloys. Ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and ferrosilicomanganese are some of the most commonly used ferroalloys. Ferrosilicomanganese, which contains both manganese and silicon, has a growing market ahead; the share of this ferroalloy in providing the manganese required in steelmaking is rapidly growing, en route to dominate the ferromanganese market among global steelmakers. Moreover, the abundant availability of chromite iron ore in has turned the country into a major net exporter of ferrochrome in the region.
Product Description
With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion of the country’s exports. In 2019, about 70% of the country’s total export revenues came from oil and oil-related products. The iron and steel industry in Oman is an emerging business with a history shorter than a decade. Still, total exports of the industry take the second largest share in the country’s export revenues, behind oil products.
Market drivers of Oman’s ferroalloys
Steel alloying is one of the most important applications of ferroalloys among steelmakers in Oman. Thus, the growth of the alloy steel market can be a major driver of ferroalloy demand in the country. Improved international standards for steel with higher strength and better physical and mechanical properties have directed steelmakers towards producing higher-quality ferroalloys. Among these, ferrochrome has a great growth potential ahead as a popular alloying elements in steelmaking.
Since removing impurities in steelmaking is one of the applications of ferroalloys, as steel output increases (especially primary steel, from minerals), demand for ferroalloys will also grow.
Oman reported its first case of Covid-19 in late March 2020. Before long, in April, social distancing and lockdowns were implemented. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped more than 30%. As the pandemic continued to spread, lockdowns were extended into mid-April, but activities were gradually resumed under certain protocols. Lockdowns are expected to continue, significantly disrupting industrial performance and eventually leading to a decline in demand for iron and steel; a recovery might be likely in the near term.
Overview of Oman’s ferroalloy market
As the iron and steel industry started in Oman, ferroalloy production was also resumed. Ferrochrome is the most important and only ferroalloy produced in the country. Rich reserves of chromite have made it possible to produce ferrochrome at low costs. Thus, not long after ferrochrome production started in Oman, ferroalloy producers achieved full capacity utilization. As ferroalloy consumption grew alongside higher crude steel output, less ferroalloy was available for exports, resulting in lower net exports. The trade balance of Oman’s ferroalloys has remained positive thanks to large exports of ferrochrome, but net imports for other ferroalloys such as ferrosilicon and ferrosilicomanganese might grow.
Breakdown of Oman’s ferroalloy market
Oman’s ferroalloy market is analyzed based on type, including ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrosilicomanganse, ferrochrome, ferronickel, ferrosilicochrome, etc. More specifically, the ferrosilicon market is divided into high- and low-grade material, while ferromanganese and ferrochrome are analyzed according to carbon content (i.e., high- and low-carbon). Moreover, in addition to product type and material, other factors such as applications and consumption are also taken into account. The applications of ferroalloys generally fall into three categories: to remove impurities in steelmaking, to produce alloy steel and to produce iron and steel cast parts.
