  • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Copper wire rod includes products with diameters of 6mm or greater (known as rod) and smaller than 6mm (known as wire). It includes the following types (in all cross sections):

  • Electrolytic cathode wire rod (ASTM B49 standard)
  • Oxygen-free wire rod (ASTM B49 standard)
  • Oxygen-free alloy wire rod (EN1977)

The first two types of wire rod have a minimum copper content of 99.99%. Alloy wire rod contains trace amounts (less than 0.1%) of silver with a total copper-silver content of 99.99%.

It should be noted that clean, high-grade scrap is used as part of the furnace feed in the production of copper wire rod, but this depends on production technology. Wire rod produced from scrap usually requires control and further processing to be converted into standard products for electrical applications. Thus, wire rod from scrap is partly used in non-electrical applications.

Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion of the country’s exports. In 2019, about 70% of the country’s total export revenues came from oil and oil-related products. Limited availability of raw materials for refined copper production has restricted upstream developments in the country. Despite a refined capacity of 20,000 tonnes, output has declined over the recent years due to the tighter availability of concentrate; output has mostly been from imported concentrate. However, the country is one of the key players in the region in terms of downstream products, especially wire rod and wires and cables. Wire rod is mostly used to produce power wires and cables, a major part of which is exported.

Market drivers of Oman’s copper wire rod

Electrical wires and cables are the only consumers of copper wire rod in Oman. With forecasts of a growing wire and cable market over the coming years as a result of industrialization and infrastructure development, demand for wire rod as the main raw material used in the production of wires and cables is expected to increase.

Population growth increases demand for new residential buildings in Oman. Since construction is one of the major consumers of wires and cables, stronger demand for these products will lead to capacity development, supporting the growth of wire rod demand.

Stronger demand for aluminum wire rod for the production of wires and cables with aluminum conductors is one of the challenges for copper wire rod producers and can restrict their market size. In addition to lower prices, aluminum conductors are more efficient in transmission lines compared to copper conductors.

Overview of Oman’s copper wire rod market

There is only one wire rod producer in Oman, which converts almost all of its output into wires and cables. Until the mid-2010s, the company secured most of its raw materials (refined copper) from the only refined producer in the country; but as refined output gradually declined and came to a halt, the company started using imported cathode. Other wire rod consumers are also relying on imports. With tighter availability of refined copper and problems related to buying small volumes, the share of imports in the country’s wire rod demand is expected to increase; on this account, net imports are expected to expand over the coming years.

Breakdown of Oman’s copper wire rod market

Both supply and demand in Oman’s copper wire rod market have been analyzed; demand has also been broken down based on application, both in the historical period and the forecast period. On this basis, copper wire rod is used in the production of wires and busbars. Moreover, the copper wire market has also been analyzed in terms of applications, including HV wires and cables, LV wires and cables, telecom cables, and winding wire.
