Copper scrap is one of the supply sources in the copper industry. It accounts for a third of total copper consumption in Oman. Scrap is used in either of two ways: it is cast and refined into cathodes or unwrought products, or directly used in the production of copper and alloy semis. In the latter case, production costs are significantly reduced. Thus, copper scrap is mostly cast into unwrought products and sold to upstream buyers (to be converted into cathode) and downstream semis producers. It should be noted that semis producers with fire refining furnaces directly use scrap rather than secondary unwrought copper to produce semis.

Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion of the country’s exports. In 2019, about 70% of the country’s total export revenues came from oil and oil-related products. Limited availability of raw materials for refined copper production has restricted upstream developments in the country. Despite a refined capacity of 20,000 tonnes, output has declined over the recent years due to the tighter availability of concentrate; output has mostly been from imported concentrate. However, the country is one of the key players in the region in terms of downstream products, especially wire rod and wires and cables. Wire rod is mostly used to produce power wires and cables, a major part of which is exported.

Market drivers of Oman’s copper scrap

Oman’s refined copper market has dealt with tight availability over the recent years. Copper scrap, an alternative to refined copper, can largely fill the supply gap.

Currently, due to the high copper prices, the consumption of copper in some applications has been replaced with other metals such as aluminum and zamak. With forecasts of higher copper prices in the future, the trend is expected to continue; this will dampen demand growth for copper and scrap.

Overview of Oman’s copper scrap market

Oman’s copper scrap market is rather small, both in terms of supply and demand. Most of the scrap collected in the country is shipped to the UAE, a regional trade hub, with a small part being used domestically. However, tight refined availability has been a challenge over the recent years; the issue is expected to be more pronounced over the coming years. Thus, not only is the share of scrap in the feed of refined consumers expected to increase, but it will also replace concentrate in refined production; secondary cathode will account for a larger share of cathode production.

Breakdown of Oman’s copper scrap market

Oman’s copper scrap supply is broken down into old and new scrap. Demand is also analyzed based on three factors. In the first breakdown, copper scrap is categorized according to composition: non-alloy, brass, and alloy (excluding brass); past and future trends for each category have been analyzed. The second factor breaks down the market into cathode scrap, bare bright scrap, telecom scrap, heavy scrap, winding wire scrap, and radiator tube scrap. Finally, the third factor makes a distinction based on the type of consumers, including producers of cathode (to produce anode), unwrought products, wire rod, tubes, and casting parts. Unwrought producers hold the largest share in scrap consumption.
