A major part of unwrought lead is produced from secondary sources. Refined lead is mostly used in the production of lead-acid batteries; this makes old batteries the most important raw material for refined lead production. In addition to used batteries, lead concentrate is also used as feed by refined producers; the ratio varies depending on the availability of the materials.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Iran is one of the largest producers of lead and zinc in the world; Angouran mine in Zanjan province is one of the rarest mines in the world, with high-grade oxide ore. On this account, multiple lead and zinc ore processing plants have been developed in the country. Currently, most of the country’s zinc output is exported as ingots, while lead is exported in concentrate form.
Market drivers of Iran’s unwrought lead
The Iran Vision 2025 has set a target of three million units for auto output per year. This will push demand for batteries, some of the most important products made from unwrought lead.
The growing population and the increasing urbanization will push auto demand higher. As a result, the number of cars on the road will increase each day, further driving demand for lead-acid batteries and unwrought lead by extension.
Overview of Iran’s unwrought lead market
Most of the unwrought lead output in Iran is produced from secondary sources. However, as auto output declined and disposable incomes shrank over the recent years due to inflation, both demand and production of lead-acid batteries declined. As a result, the share of mine sources in the production of unwrought lead increased. Moreover, the US sanctions against Iran significantly reduced unwrought lead exports. This put pressure on supply. But due to the high availability of mine sources, Iran is expected to remain a net exporter of unwrought lead and gradually recover the decline in exports due to the sanctions over the recent years.
