Iran’s Iron Ore Fine and Concentrate Market Outlook Report

  • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Mined iron ore generally has a grade below 50%; using it to produce crude steel, although technically possible, incurs high production costs and the economy is annulled due to the low recovery rate. Thus, most steelmakers use iron ore with grades above 60% to economically justify their operations. Iron ore processed to be used in the steel chain is in either of two forms: fine, and concentrate. Iron ore can be divided into magnetite and hematite ore depending on ore type. The easier processing of magnetite iron ore to remove deleterious elements has resulted in higher premiums for this type of iron ore on the market.

Product Description

With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Iran’s massive iron ore reserves have been strong drivers of developments in the iron and steel industry; the country is the largest producer of iron ore in the region. Steel output in Iran has increased significantly over the past years; the country was the tenth largest producer on a global scale in 2019.

Market drivers of Iran’s iron ore fine and concentrate

Iran is planning to ramp up crude steel capacity to 55 million tonnes by 2025. Since steel is mostly produced from primary sources and domestic raw materials, demand for raw materials, especially iron ore, will increase as steelmaking capacities are ramped up.

Many analysts are forecasting that the global demand for iron ore fine and concentrate will grow along with the increasing global output of crude steel. This will translate into a growing export market for Iranian producers, while the depreciation of the rial is also adding to the attractiveness of exports.

Most of the crude steel in Iran is produced by melting sponge iron in electric furnaces; to produce sponge iron, DRI-grade iron ore pellets are used. This has driven the development of pelletizing capacities to make the country the largest producer of pellets in the region. As a result, demand for iron ore fine and concentrate will increase.

Overview of Iran’s iron ore fine and concentrate market

Iran is a dry country. The processing of iron ore into fines and concentrate is facing the challenge of water shortage. Most iron ore processing plants are located near mines, away from water sources; this has multiplied costs related to water supply. Thus, only large companies able to deal with water-related costs can keep up their operations, while other producers are gradually thrown out of the competition. In order to reduce costs, these companies buy iron ore from mines at high discounts, putting significant pressure on the profit margins of small miners. This will hinder the growth of iron ore production and processing in the country.

Breakdown of Iran’s iron ore fine and concentrate market

Iran’s iron ore market is analyzed separately for iron ore fine and concentrate. Iron ore fine commonly comes in grades of about 58%, while concentrate grade is about 65%. The consumption of iron ore fine and concentrate is also broken down into agglomeration or sintering and pelletizing.
