Iran’s Ferrous Scrap and Waste Market Outlook Report

- TRY: 365,000 ₺
Ferrous scrap includes steel and iron scrap that is either produced during fabrication (new scrap) or when end-of-life products are scrapped (old scrap). Regardless of how it is produced, there are different types of scrap including heavy melting scrap, light-weight scrap, black sheet, busheling, and turnings. Demand for heavy melting scrap, which contains more steel and iron, is stronger. Ferrous scrap is mainly used by crude steel producers in Iran, but other operations such as cast parts manufacturers and ferroalloy producers also use ferrous scrap.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Iran’s massive iron ore reserves have been strong drivers of developments in the iron and steel industry; the country is the largest producer of iron ore in the region. Steel output in Iran has increased significantly over the past years; the country was the tenth largest producer on a global scale in 2019.
Market drivers of Iran’s ferrous scrap
Owing to the increasing industrialization, the share of the manufacturing sector in Iran’s economy has increased. As the production of finished products (such as cars and home appliances) increases, end-of-life scrapping will also increase, pushing up the supply of ferrous scrap in the domestic market. Along with industrial development, demand for steel as the most commonly used industrial metal will grow. This will drive the production of steel and consequently boost demand for scrap.
Iran is planning to ramp up crude steel capacity to 55 million tonnes by 2025. However, forecasts suggest a supply deficit of iron ore, the main raw material used to produce crude steel in Iran. Thus, demand for ferrous scrap as substitute for sponge iron will strengthen.
Overview of Iran’s ferrous scrap market
About 10% of Iran’s total crude steel output is accounted for by the remelting and recycling of scrap. The country is considered an importer of ferrous scrap, but as sponge iron projects came online earlier than expected, the market is facing oversupply and ferrous scrap imports have declined. However, imports are expected to increase again once steelmaking projects are completed and demand for sponge iron strengthens. Even then, since the steel industry in Iran is planned based on sponge iron, replacing it with scrap will be costly; thus, the share of scrap in crude steel output is not expected to increase significantly. As a result, net imports are not likely to increase noticeably.
Breakdown of Iran’s ferrous scrap market
Iran’s ferrous scrap market can be broken down using three factors. In the first breakdown, ferrous scrap falls into old and new scrap based on origin; scrap produced during fabrication is called new scrap, while scrap from end-of-life goods is known as old scrap. The second factor divides ferrous scrap into heavy melting scrap, light-weight scrap, black sheet, busheling, and turnings. Finally, in the third breakdown, ferrous scrap is categorized based on its applications and consumers, including producers of crude steel, ferroalloys, and cast parts.
