Ferroalloys are the most important consumables for steelmakers, used to remove impurities or produce steel alloys. Ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and ferrosilicomanganese are some of the most commonly used ferroalloys. Ferrosilicomanganese, which contains both manganese and silicon, has a growing market ahead; the share of this ferroalloy in providing the manganese required in steelmaking is rapidly growing, en route to dominate the ferromanganese market among global steelmakers. Ferrosilicomanganese is more commonly used by steelmakers that produce steel from primary material. The ratio of ferroalloys used in Iran’s steel production will be significant.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. With an annual crude steel output of 17 million tonnes, Iran is among the largest producers in the region. About 80% of the country’s crude steel has been produced using electric furnaces. The share of blast furnaces in total steel output has declined over the past years. Owing to the availability of cheap energy carriers such as gas, electric furnaces constitute the largest share of crude steel capacity development; the number of operating blast furnaces is small compared to electric furnaces.
Market drivers of Iran’s ferroalloys
The quality and volume of ferroalloy output depend on steel output as steelmakers account for 85% of total ferroalloy purchase. Given the goals set for steel output in the Iran Vision 2025, there is hope that other industries supporting the steel industry will continue to grow.
Steel alloying is another important application of ferroalloys among Iranian steelmakers. Thus, the growth in the alloy steel market can drive demand for ferroalloys.
Electrical power is necessary in the production of ferroalloys; as electricity prices increase, the profit margin of ferroalloy producers shrink, leading to challenges in production. Energy prices for industries are expected to be determined by global prices; in that case, development in Iran’s ferroalloy industry will be rendered impossible.
Overview of Iran’s ferroalloy market
The trade balance of Iran’s ferrosilicon was in negative territory in some years, when demand was met through imports. However, since 2014, when domestic output was ramped up and exports became increasingly attractive, trade balance has improved. Currently, due to the abundant reserves of silicon ore in Iran, the country is a major producer and exporter of ferrosilicon in the region. Ferrosilicon is the only ferroalloy that the country does not need to import; all raw materials including coke, coal, and high-grade silicon ore are available to producers.
While Iran has rich reserves of silicon and chrome ore, the country’s manganese reserves are not well-suited to the production of ferromanganese. Given the limited reserves of high-quality manganese in the country and the tight availability of raw materials for ferromanganese producers, steelmakers are forced to import part of the industry’s requirements. Thus, trade balance will be tipped towards net imports.
The trade balance of ferrosilicomanganese in Iran has been negative over the past years. Despite the availability of raw materials, exports have underperformed and producers are facing more issues in getting a firm foothold in the market. Due to the higher prices of domestic products compared to imports, many consumers prefer to use imported products. Therefore, trade balance is expected to remain negative over the coming years.
Breakdown of Iran’s ferroalloy market
Iran’s ferroalloy market is analyzed based on type, including ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrosilicomanganse, ferrochrome, ferromolybdenum, and ferrosilicon magnesium. More specifically, the ferrosilicon market is divided into high- and low-grade material, while ferromanganese and ferrochrome are analyzed according to carbon content (i.e., high- and low-carbon). Moreover, in addition to product type and material, other factors such as applications and consumption are also taken into account. The applications of ferroalloys generally fall into three categories: to remove impurities in steelmaking, to produce alloy steel and to produce iron and steel cast parts.
