Iran’s Copper Wire Rod Market Outlook Report

10,019

  • TRY: 365,000 ₺

  • Copper wire rod includes products with diameters of 6mm or greater (known as rod) and smaller than 6mm (known as wire). It includes the following types (in all cross sections):
    • Electrolytic cathode wire rod (ASTM B49 standard)
    • Oxygen-free wire rod (ASTM B49 standard)
    • Oxygen-free alloy wire rod (EN1977)

The first two types of wire rod have a minimum copper content of 99.99%. Alloy wire rod contains trace amounts (less than 0.1%) of silver with a total copper-silver content of 99.99%.

It should be noted that clean, high-grade scrap is used as part of the furnace feed in the production of copper wire rod, but this depends on production technology. Wire rod produced from scrap usually requires control and further processing to be converted into standard products for electrical applications. Thus, wire rod from scrap is partly used in non-electrical applications.

Product Description

With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Due to its rich copper reserves, the country is the largest copper producer in the region; in 2019, the country was ranked the sixth largest in terms of copper reserves and the fifteenth largest copper producer in the world. But considering the capacity being built in the country, the rank in copper production can improve.

Market drivers of Iran’s copper wire rod

Electrical wires and cables are the most important and largest consumers of copper wire rod in Iran. Since demand for these products is expected to increase, albeit at slower growth rates, the production of copper wire rod will also increase.

Developments in the construction industry, especially in residential buildings, are a major driver of demand for copper wire rod in the form of wires and cables. Construction standards in Iran are not very firm; thus, unsuitable wires and cables such as copper clad aluminum wire and stranded wire (instead of solid wire) are used. On this account, construction development does not directly affect demand for wires and cables.

Higher output in the transportation industry translates into stronger demand for wires and cables as well as wire rod as a result. Demand from the industry, like the electric infrastructure, is expected to significantly affect the wire rod market.

Stronger demand for aluminum wire rod for the production of wires and cables with aluminum conductors is one of the challenges for copper wire rod producers and can restrict their market size.

Overview of Iran’s copper wire rod market

The trade balance of copper wire rod in Iran has always been positive; the country is a net exporter. Over the recent years, net exports have increased, mostly consisting of copper wire (with diameters smaller than 6mm). With improved availability of raw materials over the coming years as well as the limited demand growth, the country’s trade balance is expected to move further towards net exports.

Breakdown of Iran’s copper wire rod market

Both supply and demand in Iran’s copper wire rod market have been analyzed; demand has also been broken down based on application, both in the historical period and the forecast period. On this basis, copper wire rod is used in the production of wires and busbars. Moreover, the copper wire market has also been analyzed in terms of applications, including HV wires and cables, LV wires and cables, telecom cables, and winding wire.
