Flat copper products include plates, sheets, strips, and foil (PSSF). They are available as pure copper products as well as alloy products. Sheets, strips, and foils are available both in coils and pre-cut pieces. Alloy PSSF, especially brass products, have the widest range of applications; these are used in switches, sockets, electrical connectors, artisanal handicrafts, ammunition, and automobile radiators. Copper PSSF are also used in electrical connectors, printed circuit boards, HVAC, home appliances, artisanal handicrafts, and shipbuilding. Moreover, electrical applications, coin blanks, and telecom equipment are some of the most important applications of alloy PSSF such as copper-nickel, bronze-tin, and bronze-phosphorus.

Product Description

With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Due to its rich copper reserves, the country is the largest copper producer in the region; in 2019, the country was ranked the sixth largest in terms of copper reserves and the fifteenth largest copper producer in the world. But considering the capacity being built in the country, the rank in copper production can improve.

Market drivers of Iran’s copper PSSF

Given the outlook of population growth, construction development, and power demand, more electrical connectors will be needed. Considering Iran’s limited trade and liquidity issues, the share of domestic output in the market for electrical connectors is expected to increase. Since the production of electrical connectors requires alloy PSSF and given that the market for these products is expected to grow due to population growth and construction development, demand for copper PSSF, especially alloy products, is expected to strengthen.

The minting operations of the central bank are some of the most important consumers of alloy PSSF. As the rial depreciated over the recent decades, the number of coins declined while notes increased. This is while coin minting is one of the consumers of alloy sheets. No change is expected in the country’s notes and coins in the medium term, but more notes are likely to be converted into coins and notes with greater value will be printed. Coin minting will not change in the timeframe.

Over the past decades, considerable volumes of copper artisanal handicrafts were used in Iran. However, as modern products entered the market over time, copper artisanal handicrafts were removed from Iranian households. Currently, these products are attracting renewed attention. The production of artisanal handicrafts requires copper and alloy PSSF. Thus, demand for copper and alloy PSSF is expected to improve as the market for artisanal handicrafts gains momentum.

Overview of Iran’s copper PSSF market

The trade balance of Iran’s copper PSSF has completely changed over the recent decade; this is due to the downtrend in exports while imports were increasing. Between 2009 and 2013, Iran was a net exporter of copper and alloy PSSF; however, the country turned into a net importer between 2014 and 2018. This was a reflection of economic problems in the country over the recent years, which have deteriorated due to stricter sanctions, leading to the downtrend in exports. Moreover, growing demand for copper-nickel sheets and their imports further supported the transition from net exports to net imports. Given Iran’s economic outlook, the country is expected to remain a net importer of copper PSSF; as domestic output declines along with the growing demand, net imports are expected to increase.

Breakdown of Iran’s copper PSSF market

Iran’s copper PSSF market is analyzed based on composition and application. In terms of composition, the products fall into three categories: copper parts (non-alloy), brass parts, and alloy parts (excluding brass); brass parts constitute the largest part of output and consumption. Copper PSSF are also analyzed according to applications; infrastructure, industrial equipment, and durable goods are some of the largest consumer industries.
