Carbon steel accounts for 90% of total global steel output; but there are drawbacks to this type of steel, such as weak mechanical properties and low corrosion resistance. Alloy steel and stainless steel have been developed to offset these drawbacks. About 50% of alloy steel consumption is accounted for by the construction sector. According to estimates, Iran’s alloy steel market requires further development. On the demand side, despite higher prices in rial terms due to the depreciation of the rial against the US dollar, demand for alloy steel will increase.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. The production of steel has increased significantly over the past years; the country was the tenth largest producer in the world in 2019.
Market drivers of Iran’s alloy steel
Alloy steel consumer industries in Iran include the oil and gas industry and power plants at the top, followed by food industries, equipment for industrial kitchens, health and medical equipment, military and nuclear equipment, and the construction industry. High tensile strength and resistance against abrasion and tear at high temperatures have resulted in considerable demand for these products.
Given that steel and steel products are priced based on the US dollar, higher exchange rates will translate into higher alloy steel prices in Iran’s market. According to the IMF, as tensions between Iran and the West intensify, exchange rates will continue to grow; they will have tripled or quadrupled by 2024.

Although there are considerable alloy steel capacities in Iran, more capacities need to be set up and output should be ramped up. Given the tight availability of semi-finished alloy steel in the country, operating rates at producers of alloy steel products are below 50%. Iran has mostly been an importer of alloy steel products.
