  • Oman’s Aluminum Unwrought Market Outlook Report

    • TRY: 365,000 ₺

Aluminum smelters (unwrought producers) fall into two categories: primary and secondary smelters. Molten aluminum cast as unwrought products can be produced either through alumina electrolysis in primary smelters or through remelting scrap and pure ingots in secondary smelters. Primary smelting is a cost-intensive process; thus, such plants are usually large-scale producers that can be economical with large capacities. But remelting aluminum in secondary smelters requires much lower costs, making small-scale capacities economical.

Aluminum smelting and the production of unwrought aluminum in Oman have mainly started after primary smelting began and Sohar’s smelters came online. Sohar Aluminium Company was established in 2004 and operations started since 2008. Accounting for almost two thirds of the country’s total unwrought output, Sohar offers its products to the market mainly as ingots or T-bars; however, the largest part of the company’s domestic sales is in the form of hot metal to downstream plants nearby, with ingots and T-bars being mostly exported. The other one third of the country’s unwrought output is by secondary smelters that produce alloys. Unwrought products such as slabs and bus bars are the most important ones produced by secondary smelters in Oman.

China’s plan to self-sufficiency in copper cathode production has caused huge amount of investment in copper smelting and refining sector of this country. The first driver of such investing is Chinese copper demand growth due to economic development during last decades. Self-sufficiency in copper cathode production which is aimed to decrease dependency to refined imports, will result in high dependency in concentrate import in near future. Middle east is net exporter of refined metal in the world.

Recycling industrial scrap and waste helps plants to use low cost raw materials as well as contributing to environment. These materials seem more valuable when refined metal has high prices such as copper. Global trade of copper scrap dropped during 2012-2016 because of bearish copper market. Middle east is net exporter of copper scrap forming 5% of global trade volume.

    • TRY: 5,000 ₺

Global trade of copper cathode has been increasing during 2001-2016 period. It can be simply inferred that import demand in consuming countries has been raised as copper markets grew. This is the main reason of supply rise in producing countries/regions. Middle east not only produce refined metal but also include copper markets so that this region is a net importer of copper cathode. Import share of this regions equal 7% of global cathode trade.

Relying on hydrocarbon reserves, Saudi Arabia’s economy is highly dependent to oil and gas industry; while development in non-petroleum economies can be followed by their copper consumption trend. There is no copper smelter and refinery in Saudi Arabia, thus the country is not a refine copper producer. However, this country consumes refined copper in order to produce rod, wire and cables.
