    A major part of unwrought zinc is produced from the leaching of oxide ore in sulfuric acid and the electrowinning process. All unwrought zinc produced in Saudi Arabia uses the hydrometallurgical method, but most of the leached oxide ore comes from the oxidation of zinc dust in electric arc furnaces. Saudi Arabia’s demand for unwrought zinc is mostly met through imports, with domestic output taking a small share.

    Lead and zinc are usually found together in mines; almost 70% of total global mine production of lead comes from reserves that contain both minerals. Thus, lead concentrate is produced inevitably when producing zinc concentrate; there is a strong correlation between the mine output of these metals. However, since most of Saudi Arabia’s zinc output comes from copper-zinc mines, mine production of lead is not significant in the country.
