Aluminum smelters (unwrought producers) fall into two categories: primary and secondary smelters. Molten aluminum cast as unwrought products can be produced either through alumina electrolysis in primary smelters or through remelting scrap and pure ingots in secondary smelters. Primary smelting is a cost-intensive process; thus, such plants are usually large-scale producers that can be economical with capacities above 100,000 tonnes. But remelting aluminum in secondary smelters requires much lower costs, making small-scale capacities economical.

A major portion of aluminum sheets and plates fall in the non-heat-treatable alloy category. Series 3xxx and 5xxx alloys take the largest market share. There are also series 1xxx alloy sheets and plates, mainly used in electrical applications. Aluminum sheets and plates in Turkey are mostly produced using cold rolling. There are fewer passes in the cold rolling process, which translates into less equipment required, lower capital intensity, and lower production costs.

Packaging for chemicals and beverages, false ceilings, dampa ceilings and tiles, as well as composite panels are some of the main applications of aluminum sheets and plates. Thus, construction and packaging are the main consumers of these products in Turkey. Both industries are expected to grow over the coming years.

Most of the aluminum foil produced in Turkey uses continuous casting and rolling. Plants using this process are generally smaller (in terms of output capacity) than those using hot rolling. Yet, as cold rolling requires fewer rolling passes and is carried out without any heat, production costs are lower than hot rolling. Moreover, owing to less expensive equipment, it also requires lower capital costs. Perishable food and drug packaging as well as disposable containers are the most important applications of aluminum foil.
