Ferroalloys are the most important consumables for steelmakers, used to remove impurities or produce steel alloys. Ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and ferrosilicomanganese are some of the most commonly used ferroalloys. Ferrosilicomanganese, which contains both manganese and silicon, has a growing market ahead; the share of this ferroalloy in providing the manganese required in steelmaking is rapidly growing, en route to dominate the ferromanganese market among global steelmakers.
Product Description
With a per-capita GDP of $61,000 in 2019, the UAE was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Gold, diamond, and pearl (as jewelry) account for a quarter of exports from the country. With a history of over 20 years in the UAE, the iron and steel industry accounts for 2% of the country’s exports. Downstream iron and steel products constitute the major share of exports in the industry.
Market drivers of the UAE’s ferroalloys
Steel alloying is one of the most important applications of ferroalloys among steelmakers. Thus, the growth in the alloy steel market can drive demand for ferroalloys. Improved international standards for stronger steel with better physical and mechanical properties have prompted steelmakers to produce higher quality alloy steel.
Ferroalloys are also used in steelmaking to remove impurities; thus, as steel output increases, especially from primary sources, demand for ferroalloys will grow.
The UAE reported its first case of Covid-19 in February 2020. Not much longer, in March, social distancing and lockdowns were implemented. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. As the pandemic continued to spread, lockdowns were extended into mid-April, but activities were gradually resumed under certain protocols. The country is now past the first wave of Covid-19, but many are still forecasting worse to come in the coming months. Thus, lockdowns are expected to continue, albeit temporarily, disrupting industrial performance and eventually lead to a decline in the country’s markets.
Overview of the UAE’s ferroalloy market
Along with the development of the iron and steel industry in the UAE, which boosted demand for ferroalloys, the country’s ferroalloy market also improved. However, due to the tight availability of raw materials for ferroalloy production, supply fell behind demand, turning the country into a net importer. Ferroalloys such a ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese depend on imported raw materials, while ferrochrome is mostly produced from domestic sources. But to purchase raw materials for ferroalloy production on international markets is to compete with giant purchasers such as China. Thus, most ferroalloy output is based on the availability of domestic raw materials; on this basis, only the production of ferroalloys with relatively higher consumption is economical. Other ferroalloys are imported as they cannot be produced domestically. As a result, the country’s ferroalloys are small, while imports are significant. Following the past trend, net imports are expected to increase as steel output gradually increases.
Breakdown of the UAE’s ferroalloy market
The UAE’s ferroalloy market is analyzed based on type, including ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrosilicomanganse, ferrochrome, ferronickel, ferrosilicochrome, etc. More specifically, the ferrosilicon market is divided into high- and low-grade material, while ferromanganese and ferrochrome are analyzed according to carbon content (i.e., high- and low-carbon). Moreover, in addition to product type and material, other factors such as applications and consumption are also taken into account. The applications of ferroalloys generally fall into three categories: to remove impurities in steelmaking, to produce alloy steel and to produce iron and steel cast parts.
