Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $61,000 in 2019, the United Arab Emirates was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Gold, diamond, and pearl (as jewelry) account for a quarter of exports from the country. With a history of over 20 years in the UAE, the iron and steel industry accounts for 2% of the country’s exports. Downstream iron and steel products constitute the major share of exports in the industry. A major part of the country’s annual steel output is galvanized using zinc; this can drive the development of zinc capacities.

Market drivers of the UAE’s unwrought zinc

Developments in the iron and steel industry, and higher output of galvanized steel as a result, are one of the major drivers of unwrought zinc. A major portion of galvanized steel is used in construction and infrastructure. With the growing population and the increasing urbanization in the coming years, construction and infrastructure are expected to grow; this can support demand for galvanized steel and unwrought zinc as a result.

Overview of the UAE’s unwrought zinc market

The UAE’s unwrought zinc output is mostly used by steelmakers to produce galvanized steel. Without refined capacities, the country’s demand is met through imports, which have increased over the recent years. Given the major role of infrastructure in determining demand for galvanized steel and considering forecasts of increased infrastructure development in the country, demand for galvanized steel and unwrought zinc as a result is expected to increase. As the share of scrap in the UAE’s steel output is growing, raw material for secondary zinc production is expected to increase with increased melting of galvanized scrap in electric arc furnaces; this will drive developments in secondary zinc capacities. As a result of increased domestic supply, import requirements will ease. However, capacity development of unwrought zinc will not be enough to entirely obviate imports. On this basis, net imports are expected to decline over the coming years.

Breakdown of the UAE’s unwrought zinc market

On the demand side, a distinction is made based on applications of unwrought zinc in the UAE; producers of galvanized steel (as direct consumers) as well as construction and infrastructure (as end users) are the main consumers.
