- TRY: 365,000 ₺
A major part of unwrought lead is produced from secondary sources. Refined lead is mostly used in the production of lead-acid batteries; this makes old batteries the most important raw material for refined lead production. In addition to used batteries, lead concentrate is also used as feed by refined producers; the ratio varies depending on the availability of the materials.
Product Description
With a per-capita GDP of $61,000 in 2019, the United Arab Emirates was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Gold, diamond, and pearl (as jewelry) account for a quarter of exports from the country. The UAE’s geographical location has made it a major trade hub in the region; this has driven industrial development in the country, including the recycling of lead from old batteries and the production of new batteries.
Market drivers of the UAE’s unwrought lead
The UAE’s trade relations, which have turned it into a regional trade hub, have provided the opportunity for the low-cost marketing and sales of its domestic output in the country’s numerous trade partners. Emirati producers hold a major share of the regional markets, which mostly include developing countries without battery production capacities. This can drive the output of lead-acid batteries in the UAE, boosting demand for unwrought lead.
The growing population and the increasing urbanization will push auto demand higher. As a result, the number of cars on the road will increase each day, further driving demand for lead-acid batteries and unwrought lead by extension.
The UAE’s hot climate has put pressure on the lifespan of lead-acid batteries; this can drive demand for batteries and unwrought lead as a result.
Overview of the UAE’s unwrought lead market
Most of the unwrought lead output in the UAE is produced from secondary sources (old batteries). Lead-acid battery producers consume most of the country’s unwrought lead output. Their stronger demand has led to a negative trade balance for the country over the past years; the UAE has remained a net importer of unwrought lead. With the development of consumers, net imports have increased over the past years. Higher lead-acid battery output is expected to push imports higher, leading to new recycling capacities of old batteries.
Breakdown of the UAE’s unwrought lead market
On the demand side, a distinction is made based on applications of unwrought lead in the UAE; transportation and automotive are the main consumer industries.
