Aluminum casting parts are part of the downstream supply chain of the aluminum industry; raw materials for the sector include both primary and secondary sources. One of the unique properties of aluminum in addition to the high specific strength and its high electrical and thermal conductivity, is the relatively low melting point that makes casting possible at low costs. Aluminum casting parts are produced using a variety of processes. Among these, pressure die casting and permanent mold casting are the most common. Sand casting also takes a considerable share of the market owing to low initial cost requirements.
The possibility of casting aluminum into complex shapes has translated into wide applications of casting parts in various industries. On a global scale, the automotive industry is the largest consumer of aluminum casting parts; however, in the United Arab Emirates, construction, followed by durable goods (with a smaller share), is the largest consumer of aluminum casting parts.
Product Description
With a per-capita GDP of $60,600 in 2019, the United Arab Emirates was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar. Despite being the most diverse economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the country is still reliant on oil. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion (more than half) of the country’s exports. Gold, diamond, and pearl (as jewelry) account for a quarter of exports from the country. Aluminum production has a long history in the United Arab Emirates; it is the third country in the region that started producing aluminum, behind Iran and Bahrain. With annual production of 2.6 million tonnes, it is the largest producer in the region and the fifth largest on a global scale. Aluminum production in the country started with the commission of Dubal in 1979. Since 2009, EMAL, the second largest producer in the country, also joined in the production of aluminum. A few years later in 2013, the two countries were joined under EGA. In order to minimize the risk of raw material supply, the company invested in a mine in Guinea to secure the supply of bauxite. It also built an alumina refinery, which was commissioned last year. Over 2 million tonnes of the country’s 5.2-million-tonne alumina demand will be supplied from domestic output, with the remaining part being imported through long-term contracts with foreign companies.
Market drivers of the United Arab Emirates’ aluminum casting parts
Aluminum gates for buildings are one of the most important consumption cases of aluminum casting parts in the United Arab Emirates; these gates are mostly used in luxurious buildings. The country’s strong economic growth over the past years has lifted its per-capita GDP above many countries in the region, driving consumerism and promoting the use of luxury goods. The promotion of such a culture can be a strong driver for aluminum casting parts in products such as aluminum gates.
The United Arab Emirates reported its first case of Covid-19 in February 2020. Not much longer, in March, social distancing and lockdowns were implemented. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped to around 60%. As the pandemic continued to spread, lockdowns were extended into mid-April, but activities were gradually resumed under certain protocols. The country is now past the first wave of Covid-19, but many are still forecasting worse to come in the coming months. Thus, lockdowns are expected to continue, albeit temporarily, disrupting industrial performance and eventually lead to a decline in demand for aluminum semis.
Overview of the United Arab Emirates’ aluminum casting parts market
Despite the growth over the past years, the aluminum casting parts market in the United Arab Emirates is still facing weak demand due to a lack of development in consumer industries such as automotive. However, capacities for the production of auto parts are being developed in the country, which will boost domestic demand for aluminum casting parts. At the same time, supply is also expected to increase; the domestic market balance is forecast to remain stable at current levels.
Breakdown of the United Arab Emirates’ aluminum casting parts market
Domestic demand for aluminum casting parts in the forecast timeframe as well as the previous period has been broken down using three factors. The first factor breaks down the market into three categories based on alloy material: commercially pure aluminum, heat-treatable alloys, and non-heat-treatable alloys. Past and future trends for each type of material have been analyzed. Heat-treatable alloys hold the largest share of the market. In the second breakdown, products are distinguished based on production processes: die casting, permanent mold casting, sand casting, and other casting methods, with die casting and permanent mold casting taking the largest share in the market. Finally, using the third factor, aluminum casting parts are categorized based on their applications in different industries. The construction sector is the largest consumer of aluminum casting parts in the United Arab Emirates.
