Direct-reduced iron (DRI) is produced in a solid process that converts iron ore pellets or fines into pure iron by being reduced using reducing agents. DRI products are divided into three categories based on shape and appearance: sponge iron, briquettes, and fine; fine is usually used as cold-briquetted iron. DRI can also be categorized based on production process: direct-reduced using coal, and direct-reduced using natural gas. A major part of the Middle East as one of the most important sources of natural gas has been dominated by DRI products using natural gas.

Product Description

With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. Oil and petrochemicals account for a major portion of the country’s exports. In 2019, about 70% of the country’s total export revenues came from oil and oil-related products. The iron and steel industry in Oman is an emerging business with a history shorter than a decade. Still, total exports of the industry take the second largest share in the country’s export revenues, behind oil products.

Market drivers of Oman’s DRI

Over the past years, about 80% of the country’s steel has been produced using sponge iron; thus, crude steel output can significantly affect demand for sponge iron and DRI. Meanwhile, most of the steelmakers in the region use sponge iron as raw material to produce steel. The availability of a massive crude steel market in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf has been a major driver of developments in the DRI industry in Oman.

Owing to its logistic location that provides access to Arab states of the Persian Gulf for producers from far away, Oman has become an attractive venue for foreign investment. On this basis, the country’s iron ore pellet production was developed through a joint venture with the Brazilian Vale. This has facilitated access to raw materials for sponge iron production in the country, while many foreign rivals producing DRI in the region are having difficulty securing raw materials.

Ferrous scrap is the only substitute for sponge iron in the production of crude steel. Although scrap prices are usually higher than those of sponge iron, scrap can significantly reduce production costs due to higher purity and minor alloy elements. Thus, scrap can be considered a substitution threat for sponge iron in Oman, restricting the development of the country’s sponge iron market.

Oman reported its first case of Covid-19 in late March 2020. Before long, in April, social distancing and lockdowns were implemented. As a result, the country’s mobility index dropped more than 30%. As the pandemic continued to spread, lockdowns were extended into mid-April, but activities were gradually resumed under certain protocols. Lockdowns are expected to continue, significantly disrupting industrial performance and eventually leading to a decline in demand for iron and steel; a recovery might be likely in the near term.

Overview of Oman’s DRI market

There is only one DRI producer in Oman, operating since 2011 with an annual output of about 1.5 million tonnes of sponge iron. In the early years of the plant’s operation, most of the output was exported due to a lack of demand; however, as steelmaking capacities came online, the consumption of sponge iron increased to put the country among importers of DRI in the region. Although demand is currently beyond domestic supply and part of the steelmaking feed has been replaced by scrap, the drivers of supply-side development in the country remain weak. Thus, the country’s DRI supply is not expected to change significantly and stronger demand will be supplied through imports.

Breakdown of Oman’s DRI market

Oman’s DRI market is divided into sponge iron and briquettes. Since briquettes are less porous than sponge iron, they are easier to transport than sponge iron. Due to this, hot-briquetted iron takes a sizeable share in total DRI trade. Yet, sponge iron takes the largest share of DRI output and consumption in Oman.
