With a per-capita GDP of $32,400 in 2019, Oman was the fifth largest economy in the region that year, behind Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy has steadily grown over the past years, and according to the Oman Vision 2040, economic growth is expected to continue over the coming years. The country’s logistical location that connects the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to the world is one of the major factors in expanding its relations and trade with other countries; the free trade agreement with the US since 2009 is one example. The country does not have significantly rich lead and zinc reserves on a regional scale, even though potential exploration zones for lead and zinc orebodies were recognized by preliminary geological studies. Yet, a major portion of the country’s annual steel output is coated with zinc to produce galvanized steel; this can drive zinc capacity developments.

The iron and steel industry, and the production of galvanized steel more specifically, is one of the demand drivers of unwrought zinc in Oman. Galvanized steel is mostly used in construction and infrastructure. With the growing population and increasing urbanization over the coming years, construction and infrastructure are expected to grow, boosting demand for galvanized steel and unwrought zinc by extension.

However, demand growth will fall short of justifying domestic refined production. Thus, additional demand will continue to be met from imports.
