A major part of unwrought lead is produced from secondary sources. Refined lead is mostly used in the production of lead-acid batteries; this makes old batteries the most important raw material for refined lead production. In addition to used batteries, lead concentrate is also used as feed by refined producers; the ratio varies depending on the availability of the materials.
Product Description
With a GDP of $761 billion in 2019, Turkey was the second largest economy in the region that year, behind Saudi Arabia. The country joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1961 and also became a member of G20 in 1991. Located on the West Asia copper, lead and zinc belt, Turkey has a number of mines containing these minerals. Despite massive demand for these metals, mine output is mostly exported as smelting capacities have not been developed. Thus, most of the country’s demand is met through imports or recycling.

Turkey’s auto industry has had significant development; the country is among the top five producers of light and commercial vehicles in Europe.
The growing population and the increasing urbanization will push auto demand higher. As a result, the number of cars on the road will increase each day; with approximately 20 million units on the road, the country is the largest auto market in the region. This will further drive demand for lead-acid batteries and unwrought lead by extension.

Most of the unwrought lead output in Turkey is produced from secondary sources. However, as most of the old batteries used for refined lead production come from the domestic market, refined lead output falls short of the country’s demand; the gap is filled with imports, which take a large share of Turkey’s demand. Considering the issues related to recycling old batteries, refined imports are expected to remain the main source of supply over the coming years. Auto output is expected to slow down over the coming years, but the number of failed batteries will increase; as a result, net imports of unwrought lead are not expected to grow significantly.
