A major part of unwrought zinc is produced from the leaching of oxide ore in sulfuric acid and the electrowinning process. All unwrought zinc produced in Iran uses the hydrometallurgical method. Sulfide ore is roasted before being used for unwrought production. Given the easy availability of oxide ore, there is only one smelter with roasting capacity in Iran; other smelters directly use oxide zinc ore. Galvanized steel producers are the main consumers of unwrought zinc in the country; galvanized steel has a wide range of applications including infrastructure, construction, transportation, and durable goods. The zinc coating prevents iron and steel from rusting.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Iran is one of the largest producers of lead and zinc in the world; Angouran mine in Zanjan province is one of the rarest mines in the world, with high-grade oxide ore. On this account, zinc ore processing plants have been developed in the country, without needing roasting plants. However, the mine is close to its end of life, after which access to oxide ore will be limited. This can significantly affect unwrought production. With an annual output exceeding 200,000 tonnes, Iran is the largest producer of unwrought zinc in the region.
Market drivers of Iran’s unwrought zinc
The Iran Vision 2040 has set a target of 630,000 tonnes for unwrought zinc output. The government is expected to make massive investments towards that goal, while also supporting demand.
A major portion of galvanized steel is used in construction and infrastructure. Although these industries have contracted over the recent years due to prices spikes and lower government revenues, they are expected to have relative growth over the coming years. This can support demand for galvanized steel and unwrought zinc as a result.
Overview of Iran’s unwrought zinc market
Most of the unwrought zinc output in Iran is produced from primary sources, with a small share of recycling. Due to the availability of high-grade oxide ore from Angouran mine, smelters in the country are entirely based on processing this type of ore. However, the share of sulfide ore in Iran’s mine reserves has increased over the recent years; a major part of Iran’s reserves are expected to change into sulfide ore over the coming years. Thus, the development of roasting capacities will be inevitable. The challenges involved in developing roasting capacities will restrict the growth of the unwrought zinc market in Iran. Thus, net exports of unwrought zinc are expected to decline gradually over the coming years.
Breakdown of Iran’s unwrought zinc market
Iran’s unwrought zinc market is categorized into primary and secondary products. Primary products are also analyzed based on oxide or sulfide ore used as raw materials. On the demand side, a distinction is made based on applications; producers of galvanized steel (as direct consumers) as well as construction and infrastructure (as end users) are the main consumers.
