Winding wire is part of the copper products supply chain, in the wire and cable category. Winding wire (usually with an enamel coating) is used in automotive, electronic and electromechanical equipment, home appliances, and lighting. As one of the early steps in the supply chain of wires and cables with metal conductors, metal wire rod is drawn into wires in different diameters, which are then coated with different insulations based on applications. The quality of the conductor and the enamel used in the production of winding wire significantly affects the end product; production technology also affects the quality of winding wire. In older technologies, annealing followed drawing, but in more recent technologies, the two processes are carried out simultaneously, saving time and costs.
Product Description
With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Copper is one of the main raw materials used in the wire and cable industry; about 75% of the global copper output is used to produce wires and cables. Due to its rich copper reserves, Iran is the largest copper producer in the region; in 2019, the country was ranked the sixth largest in terms of copper reserves and the fifteenth largest copper producer in the world. But considering the capacity being built in the country, the rank in copper production can improve.
Market drivers of Iran’s winding wire
There are many winding wire producers in Iran; products with large diameters are mostly used in transmission and distribution infrastructure, while smaller diameters have a smaller share in output and are used in automotive, home appliances, and electronic equipment. The renovation and development of transmission and distribution infrastructure is the only major opportunity for the industry to grow; along with the growing population and urbanization, the industry is expected to grow steadily.
Turbines and generators for power stations are partly imported and partly supplied from domestic output; they are mainly used in renewable power stations. Iran is a developing country with opportunities for the development of power infrastructure and new capacities for renewables. Given the small share of renewables in the country’s total power generation, growth opportunity is expected to be high.
In the Iran Vision 2025, output targets for evaporative coolers, refrigerators, and washing machines have been set at 3 million, 4 million, and 4 million units respectively by 2025. This will boost demand for electric motors and winding wire by extension.
Overview of Iran’s winding wire market
Due to the abundant availability of copper in Iran as one of the main raw materials for the production of wires and cables, industry sectors relying on copper conductors have witnessed better development. Winding wire, mostly produced from copper, is one of the most important products in the industry. The country has been a net exporter over the past years, and output mostly consists of copper winding wire. According to forecasts of raw material availability over the coming years as well as domestic winding wire demand, net exports are expected to increase.
Breakdown of Iran’s winding wire market
Iran’s winding wire market is broken down using three factors. In the first breakdown, winding wire is analyzed in terms of conductor type: copper and aluminum. Winding wire is also categorized based on cross section shape, including round and flat cross sections. Finally, a distinction is made based on end users, including power infrastructure, transportation, and durable goods.
