Unwrought copper is an intermediate group of products that includes slabs, billets, and ingots; it is used as raw material to produce copper semis and downstream products. It should be noted that ingots have a wider range of applications and are also used to produce billets and slabs. Alloy intermediate products (especially brass) account for the largest share of demand. This is because brass RBS have stronger demand compared to other copper semis.

Product Description

With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Due to its rich copper reserves, the country is the largest copper producer in the region; in 2019, the country was ranked the sixth largest in terms of copper reserves and the fifteenth largest copper producer in the world. But considering the capacity being built in the country, the rank in copper production can improve.

Market drivers of Iran’s unwrought copper

Automotive is one of the most important sectors of the transportation industry, which has been specially supported by the government during critical periods. Given the domestic monopoly in Iran’s auto market, government support translates into higher output. Parts manufacturers are also involved in auto manufacturing; copper semis such as wires and cables, RBS, and casting parts are widely used in the auto industry. Growth in the auto market will lead to improved markets for intermediate products (i.e., unwrought copper).

The construction industry in Iran is growing thanks to the expanding population and the increasing urbanization rate. Non-residential construction is part of the construction industry, but residential buildings currently contribute the most to the growth rate. With the housing supply deficit and the need for further development to meet domestic demand, the construction industry is expected to continue to grow and the economic recession will have a lesser impact on the sector. The industry is one of the most important consumers of copper semis including tubes, wire rod, and casting parts; as the industry expands, demand for unwrought copper strengthens.

Currently, due to its high prices, copper has been replaced with other metals such as aluminum and zamak in some applications. With forecasts of higher copper prices in the future, the trend is expected to continue. This can put pressure on demand growth for copper and unwrought copper by extension.

Overview of Iran’s unwrought copper market

The production of slabs in Iran has had significant fluctuations over the recent decade, with an overall downward trend. Weak demand for flat products (PSSF) as the major application of slabs affected production. The production of ingots and billets also declined in the timeframe. Decreased liquidity as well as financial challenges at producers were the major factors behind the decline in consumer industries of copper products in Iran, which was more pronounced over the recent decade due to a number of reasons. Since the current economic conditions are expected to continue over the coming years and considering the challenges of producers and businesses such as the lack of liquidity, weakened spending, and the loss of foreign markets, the production of slabs and billets is expected to decline over the coming years. Ingots constitute a major portion of unwrought copper production as well as exports in Iran. Thus, the trade balance of ingots has moved towards net exports, while that of other types of unwrought copper is in net imports. Net exports of ingots are expected to increase, but the trade balance of slabs and billets is expected to move further into net imports.

Breakdown of Iran’s unwrought copper market

Iran’s unwrought copper market is broken down using two factors: composition and application. Unwrought copper includes slabs, billets, and ingots; ingots hold the largest share, followed by billets. Using the first factor, unwrought copper is categorized based on composition: unwrought copper (non-alloy), unwrought brass, and unwrought alloy (excluding brass); brass products account for the largest market share in Iran. The second factor categorizes unwrought copper based on applications in different industries; infrastructure, industrial equipment, and durable goods are some of the most important consumers of unwrought copper.
