The dimensions of copper and brass rods, bars, and sections (RBS) are determined by their cross section shapes and sizes. Generally, RBS come in round, square or rectangular, and hexagonal cross sections; round RBS cross sections range from 1.5mm to 90mm. Polygonal RBS can be from 4mm to 80mm in cross section. RBS in smaller cross section sizes are sold in coils, while other products are sold as long pieces. RBS are also categorized as hollow and solid. Copper busbars are produced in round and flat forms in different sizes. These products are mostly produced through the extrusion of billets as raw materials. However, busbars and strips are partly produced from rolled copper wire rod.

Product Description

With a GDP of $415 billion in 2019, Iran was the third largest economy in the region that year. While the country’s economy was steadily growing after the drop in 2012 due to the sanctions, it dipped once again in 2019 thanks to the return of the sanctions. Due to its rich copper reserves, the country is the largest copper producer in the region; in 2019, the country was ranked the sixth largest in terms of copper reserves and the fifteenth largest copper producer in the world. But considering the capacity being built in the country, the rank in copper production can improve.

Market drivers of Iran’s copper RBS

Faucets and valves for water and gas in construction and industry are some of the major consumers of brass sections and tubes. Along with the economic growth over the recent years, the consumption of these products has increased and they have gained good markets in both construction and industry. Given the forecasts of growing population and increasing construction, the consumption of faucets in construction will increase; however, with relative development in infrastructure and forecasts of decline in the activities of industrial operations, demand for industrial faucets and valves is expected to remain flat or weaken.

Transformers are used in electrical infrastructure. Due to the population growth and the need for further development, Iran’s electrical infrastructure will grow, boosting demand for transformers. Copper RBS and sometimes alloy RBS are used in the manufacturing of transformers and electrical enclosures.

Currently, due to its high prices, copper has been replaced with aluminum and other materials. Although switching to other materials incurs costs, the costs of not replacing copper in some areas of demand are greater. With forecasts of higher copper prices in the future and further depreciation of the rial against the greenback, the substitution trend is expected to continue. However, the tight availability of aluminum as the main substitute for copper will cushion the impact.

Overview of Iran’s copper RBS market

Despite the overcapacity in Iran’s copper and alloy RBS market, the country is not contributing to regional and global markets. Exports are small relative to total output. In other words, RBS plants in Iran generally produce enough for domestic demand, with a small share left for exports. Due to the turmoil in the country’s currency market in 2018 and the continued depreciation of the rial against the dollar, products on the IME were offered at official exchange rates defined by the government, which were much lower than the open market; this created rent opportunity for cathode buyers on the IME. As a result, RBS exports surged that year. Net exports of copper RBS are expected to decline in the early years of the forecast period due to lower output; but as output outpaces demand afterwards, net exports are expected to increase.

In terms of composition, the products fall into three categories: copper RBS (non-alloy), brass RBS, and alloy RBS (excluding brass); brass RBS constitute the largest part of output and consumption. Copper RBS are also analyzed according to applications; construction, transportation, infrastructure, industrial equipment, and durable goods are some of the largest consumer industries.
